Robo-Signing Settlements a Slap on the Wrist

The Denver Business Journal recently reported that Colorado will receive a $1.8 million settlement from Lender Processing Services Inc., a company that provides services to mortgage loan companies. This is in addition to the $204.6 million Colorado will get in mortgage relief as part of the robo-signing settlement this past February. But do these punishments fit the crime?

What message are we sending? Should a company be able to blatantly disregard the law and profit from it? If we allow it to, we’re simply making fines an overhead cost for companies–the price to make money.
